this time last year.

Oh September,
do I love you or do I not?
I still haven't decided.

This time last year my family was going through
a very difficult time.
We received a call one evening from my sister in law that my oldest brother had
just been in a mountain bike accident.
She explained that she wasn't completely sure how bad his injuries were, she just
knew that he had no feeling or sensation from the neck down.

Oh, my  family was a mess. My mom was inconsolable. My sisters and I were trying to
remain strong for my mom and it was so hard.
All we wanted to do was fly out to his side immediately and be there for him but
we were awaiting more information.

And then, we heard the word.
The big scary word.
Quadriplegic.
{I can't even type the word without getting goosebumps}.
He was unable to move any part of his body from the neck down.
You can just imagine our devastation.

I don't quite remember the week that followed.
I do remember praying my little heart out.
I remember being on a conference call with the rest of my brothers and sisters and saying
a joint family prayer for him.
I remember fasting for him.
And I remember the way our family came together and figured out a schedule
that would allow one person to by his side for a week at a time.
We were going to help him through this and that was that.

I flew out from CA to GA for one week.. left my own little family behind to be with
my brother.

And in the midst of it all, I knew there was hope.
I could feel it in that room my brother was in.. there was a sense of peace,
there was just something in the room that spoke to our hearts
and reassured us that he was going to be ok.
We all felt, we just knew it.
I could see my brother every day growing stronger and healing.
The progress he was making was nothing short of a miracle.
I knew our God was hearing our prayers .. and in time, he would
reveal his plan for my brother. And reveal it He did.

He went into this rehab center without any sensation
and was discharged a month and a half later.
He was able to walk out of there using arm braces.
Amazing, isn't it?

God is so good.
He is faithful and He is true.
He walks beside us in our darkest times,
we may not realize it but He is there.

And just as I reached out to Him during that time, I reach out to him
today with a thankful and grateful heart.

Flor, this post is so beautiful. I got goose bumps reading how you family scheduled time to be by his side. What a blessing! How many siblings do you have? Where do you live in Cali? Should we be hanging out?
